Born in Wytham, Oxfordshire, James Hunter is the son of an Oxford scholar and Professor, Dr. Henry Hunter. Raised in the country, James lived the typical life of a British child until his father took a new job- in the colonies. Moving to Yorktown, New York at the age of 10, James' life was turned upside down. It took a while for the kids at school to accept James and his odd accent, not to mention the fact that there was this odd little girl who lived next door that seemed to follow him around like a puppy dog.

In fact, the two were near inseparable, that is until it was time for James to head off to university. Thanks to Henry's tenure at the school, James was granted placement at the honorable Oxford University. This was the first time Mary Ellen and he would be separated since moving to the small New York town, but James had to do it- he had his father's legacy to fulfill. It wasn't until he went off to college that James realized just what was missing in his life. Spurning his parents wishes, James returned to Mary Ellen and professed his love for her. Mary Ellen Murphy and James Hunter were soon wed and left to begin their lives together.

Eager to start a family it wasn't even a year into their marriage that Mary Ellen got pregnant with their first child. Although the pregnancy was without incident the labor was long and difficult. Mary Ellen eventually gave birth to a son, [[Jonas Hunter]]. Unfortunately due to the complications of the labor Mary Ellen developed sepsis and shortly after the birth James was told Mary would not survive the night- there was nothing the doctors could do. James took the death of his beloved wife Mary Ellen badly, however knowing that he had a child to care for, James soldiered on. Doing whatever he could to make ends meet, James worked a number of varied jobs and took care of his son as best he could. That is until little Jonas because sick at the age of three. Diagnosed with Consumption (tuberculosis) Jonas required around the clock care. In order to accommodate this need, James made the decision to move back to Britain and live with his cousins.

James was also able to finally find regular employment and eventually started a small merchant shop in Kerry. After a few years in Kenmare, Jonas was finally able to get the better of his sickness, making a full recovery at the age of ten. Unfortunately shortly thereafter James was jumped by several scoundrels on the road back from Kerry. He was attacked just outside Kenmare's town limits, his merchandise stolen and badly beaten. James died lying on the side of the road, with his waiting sons at his side.
